Kerkyra - Corfu - Greece - Kalispera!

H Kerkyra mou aressi para poli

This little green Greek island will forver have a special
place in my heart.
In a small village named Gouvia I found my special *waterhole*.
It is my home away from home.

The first time I visit Corfu was in September 1996, together
with 2 of my daughters.
We only stayed for a week but that was enough to get hooked
forver. We had such a wonderful time and found our Greek friends
that very first time.

The family running the little taverna where we eat every evening
became very dear to us.
We are *family* now after coming back so many times.

All members of my big family has been there  with me
even one grandchild. We are wellknown by now.
It is  a very special feeling to  walk down the main road
and  people are saying *Welcome back home*

It is very easy to make friends among the local people.
Smile, say Kalimera to people you meet in the morning,
Kalispera the rest of the day, and when you go home in the
evening, never forget to say Kalinikta :-)
Open up, don´t be afraid of taking part in the dancing
going on at the taverna or restaurante. It is so nice.

Gouvia is a small friendly village on the east side of Corfu
with the view of Albania just infront of you when you are on the
beach.

It is very green, lots of flowers and high cypress trees.
When you stand on the beach and look around, you will see
the high mountains just as in my header on this page.
That picture is taken on Gouvia Beach.
It is so beautiful, breathtaken views where ever you go on the
island.
The water is crystal clear and with a special green-blue
colour.
The beaches on the westcoast, Paleokastritsa, Agios Georgios, Glyfada
and Agios Gordis, to name a few, and up north in Sidari and Kassiopi
are really fantastic, all of them.

Driving the coast way from Paleokastritsa up to Sidari is something
I can rekommend highly. The road is like in Norway, sepentine like,
very small and it is an adventure, trust me .
You never know what is going to meet you after next curve.

A big touristbus, a bunch of sheeps or a Greek driver.
Yes, they drive like crasey.
That first time they didn´t like my swedish driving and they
did let me know. It was beep, beep all the time.
You do get used to ignore that after a while ;-)

Anyway it is even worse to have a Greek friend taking you
by car in to Corfu town.
Hehe, that was unforgetable memories.
Or going by cab. Do try that! lol
The easiest way to see the Island is by bus.
The local busses will take you, for a very small fee, to all parts
of Corfu.
It is not a big Island so it wont be long routes.

Corfu Town is well worth visiting. The buildings down town is a
mix from all of Corfu history. Old venetian palaces next to the
traditional greek buildings makes it a charming town.
The big Cricket pitch down at the Old Fortress with the famous
Liston buildings with their fabulous arches, and the long
alle´with all kafe´s (kafeneion´s) is another pleasant surprise
when you as a tourist need to rest your tired feets.

Here is how it´s being described in a tourist guide:

"The town of Corfu is one of the most beautiful towns in Greece.
The 17th and 18th C. apartment buildings, the paved »kantounia »
(narrow roads), the monuments and the historical buildings,
the belfries that reach up to the sky, the two Fortresses and Spianada
all blend together to compose a charming picture and which enchant
every visitor to the island. The old town, restricted between its two
Venetian castles and its walls, has a quaint character and atmosphere
that we rarely see in other Greek towns."

To go shopping in Corfu Town was really a pleasure.
I loved every moment the last time I was there.
So many nice things to buy, as gifts to the rest of the family
back home.

Food is another great thing about Greece.
I love the Greek dishes.
Souvlaki - Pastisada - Sofrito - Lambshops - LambKleftiko -
Stiffado - Moussaka just to name a few favorites and of cause,
The Greek Sallad with Feta cheese on top.

Drinks? - Yes, please! Yamas!!
The local wine, white or red is high quality.
The greek beer - Mythos
The Metaxa - Greek brandy ( hehe, love it)
And Ouzo - the best aperitif!
Ouzo drinking is an art. Or maybe it's a way of life.
Another Corfu special is Koum-Quat, made from the koumquat fruit,
licourice 20%

The cocktails you can sip on are like desserts, really, very tasty.

The Greek music is another love of mine.
You will hear that all the time and it is part of the charm.
Oh, you will get your share of popmusic too from all the bars at
night, but sitting at the taverna, having dinner and listening to
these wonderful Greek songs. That is something special.
The taverna where we always have our dinners also provides
the local dances, every evening.
It´s the male part of the family dancing for the guests.
And yes, somtimes they will drag you up too for the Zorba dance.

So, are you planning for a holiday in Greece?
Do take a trip to Corfu.
You will never regret that.
